Nora Turato

Nora Turato (1991, Zagreb, Croatia) lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Using various, but closely interwoven, media, she plays with the speed of language and the ready-made vocabulary of the Internet. Her material is collected from a multitude of sources; a collection of appropriated words, sentences, fragments, and quotes from film, advertising, literature, everyday conversations, theatre, and social media. Fragments of these texts find their way onto posters, prints, and artist books, but also form the basis for her meticulously scripted performances. Through these combinations, she reflects on the hectic (internet) culture of today. In her work, language is a signifier which constantly changes and tries, through a non-stop process of reinterpretation, to organise our culture and world.

Turato attended the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, and the Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem. This year, she completed her two year residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. Recent solo presentation include; Someone oughta tell you what it's really all about, Serralves Museum (Porto, 2019-2020); Nora Turato. explained away, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (Liechtenstein, 2019); and diffusion line, Beursschouwburg (Brussels, 2019), among others. Recent group exhibitions include: Contemporary art from Croatia, European Central Bank (Frankfurt, 2019); Wege zur Welt - Hildebrand Collection, G2 Kunsthalle (Leipzig, 2019); and Standing Still, Lying Down, As If, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (Detroit, 2019), among others.
