Biography Marc Bijl (Leerdam, Netherlands, 1970)
Marc Bijl was educated at the Royal Academy of Art & Design in s’Hertogenbosch and the Rennie Macintosh School of Art in Glasgow. In 2004 he was awarded the Charlotte Koehler prize for Young Art. Bijl is interested in the symbolic occurrence of social and political events. His work draws on labels, logo’s, symbols, political and other slogans, prayers and advertisements, and his interventions aim to undermine or underline our perception of the world we live in.
He has had solo shows at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel (2008); Upstream Gallery, Amsterdam (2008); The Breeder, Athens (2006); Gem Museum, The Hague (2005); Museum Valkhof, Nijmegen (2004); and the Giorgio De Chirico Art Center, Volos (2004).
He has participated in many group shows such as Crop Rotation, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York (2008); Athens Biennial (2007); Moscow Biennale (2007); Brave New World, CoBrA Museum, Amstelveen (2007); Loneliness of Signs, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (2006); Naked Life, Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei (2006); DARK, Museum Boymans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2006); Superstars, Kunstforum Vienna (2005) and the travelling exhibition Populism, presented at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Vilnius, the Museum for Architecture, Art and Design in Oslo, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Kunstverein in Frankfurt (2005).
