Francis Alÿs, Song for Lupita, 1998
Song for Lupita 1998
Many works by Francis Alÿs are destined for places other than the exhibition space, and are thus rarely directly apparent for the public. The works that are displayed within the museological context are no more than 'remnants' of a deed or activity that has happened elsewhere. For example, there are the many hikes that Alÿs has made. A collection of postcards with a photo of the rambling artist and a short description of the activity are the only tangible proof of these ventures.
In Squatters, Alÿs shows the public his working process. A large number of pictures are gathered together as if in an archive. The various stages of a work are illustrated by drawings on tracing paper that have been developed by cutting, pasting and being drawn over again. It seems as if they are never finished and are in a continuous state of flux. This can also be seen in the animated film Song for Lupita (1998), in which a hastily sketched, young female character pours a liquid from one glass to another in a jolting, never-ending movement.
