Giuseppe Gabellone, Untitled, 1999. Photo Bob Goedewaagen
Untitled 1999
The works of Giuseppe Gabellone are large installations and their creation is time-consuming. These works also allude to another time and place, and can be subdivided into two categories: 'foldable' sculptures and sculptures that have been captured in photographs. The foldable or double sculptures, as the artist refers to them, are present in the actual space, and can be folded up or unfolded, thus transforming them. All that remains of the other sculptures is a single photo printed in large format. Gabellone thus denies the viewer the opportunity to regard these works from various different angles; he shows his sculptures from the ideal perspective. In Porto he made a sculpture for Casa Serralves. At Witte de With there is a photograph, Untitled (1999) of a sculpture that calls to mind a rollercoaster, displayed in a closed space that the public cannot enter.
