Chantal Pontbriand is kunstcriticus, curator en de oprichter van het kunsttijdschrift PARACHUTE. Ze is organiseerde vele internationale kunstevenementen waaronder een twintigtal tentoonstellingen, vijftien internationale festivals en twaalf internationale conferenties, met daarin hoofdzakelijk een focus op fotografie, video, performance en multimedia-installaties. Van 1982 tot 2003 was zij de voorzitter en directeur van FIND in Montreal (Festival International de Nouvelle Danse). Een selectie van haar publicaties zijn: Performance: Text(e) & Documents, red. (Parachute, 1981); Fragments critiques 1978 -1998 (Jacqueline Chambon, Paris 1998) ; Communauté et Gestes, red. (Parachute, 2000); Dance: its distinct language and cultural hybridity, red. (Parachute, 2001); Sur ma manière de travailler, art et psychanalyse, co-red. met Hervé Bouchereau Parachute: Essais choisis (1975-2000), ed. (La Lettre volée, Brussels 2004). Op dit moment is Pontbriand bezig met de voorbereidingen van de aankomende tentoonstelling: HF| RG [Harun Farocki | Rodney Graham] in Jeu de Paume, Paris (6 april – 14 juni 2009), een publicatie: Grand Labo, Contemporary Art and Institutions en de publicatie van een verzameling van haar essays uit de periode van 2000-2008.
