Gardar Eide Einarsson

Gardar Eide Einarsson (b. 1976, Norway) is an artist living and working in New York, Oslo and Tokyo. He received his education from the National Academy of Fine Art, Bergen; Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Kunste, Städelschule, Frankfurt and the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York City. In his work, he critically explores various forms of social transgression and arguments for political subversion and appropriates and recontextualizes imagery from subcultures. His artistic practice comprises a wide range of media, such as text, installations, and drawing. A selection of his solo exhibitions include Gardar Eide Einarsson, Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen (2013); Sorry If I Got It Wrong, But Something Definitely Isn’t Right, Team, New York (2012); Power Has a Fragrance, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, which traveled to Reykjavik Art Museum, Reykjavik, Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm, and Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel (2010-2011); Museum of Modern Art, Fort Worth, Texas (2009); and Reykjavik Art Museum (2010). His work has been shown in group exhibitions as well, such as Lies about Painting, Moderna Museet Malmö (2013); La Décadence, Galerie Yvon Lambert, Paris (2012); New York Minute, Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, Moscow (2011), and in venues such as Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; MoMA PS1; Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki; Istanbul Museum of Modern Art; Palais de Tokyo,. He has also participated in the Whitney Biennial, the Istanbul Biennial and the Sydney Biennial among others.
