Chantal Pontbriand

Chantal Pontbriand, art critic and curator, is the founding director of contemporary art magazine PARACHUTE. She has curated many international contemporary art events: some twenty exhibitions, fifteen international festivals and twelve international conferences, focusing mainly on photography, video, performance, and multimedia installation. From 1982 to 2003, she was president and director of the FIND in Montreal (Festival International de Nouvelle Danse). Selected writings include: Performance: Text(e)s & Documents, ed. (Parachute, 1981); Fragments critiques 1978 -1998 (Jacqueline Chambon, Paris 1998); Communauté et Gestes, ed. (Parachute, 2000); Dance: its distinct language and cultural hybridity, ed. (Parachute, 2001); Suma manière de travailler, art et psychanalyse ed. with Hervé Bouchereau (Parachute, 2002); Parachute: Essais choisis (1975-2000), ed. (La Lettre volée, Brussels 2004). Pontbriand is currently preparing an upcoming exhibition and publication at the Jeu de Paume in Paris: HF| RG [Harun Farocki | Rodney Graham] (6 April – 14 June 2009) and several books: Grand Labo, Contemporary art and Institutions, as well as an anthology of her own essays from 2000 to 2008.
