Rana Hamadeh — The Ten Murders of Josephine

The Ten Murders of Josephine is a long-term project by artist Rana Hamadeh, structured through an exhibition, an operatic production, a publication and a film. Drawing on historian Saidiya Hartman and poets NourbeSe Philip and Fred Moten’s writings, Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, Kafka’s Josephine, interpretations of Quranic exegesis and Arabic modal musical scales, the project proposes a particular dramaturgy of research that culminates in the realization of an Opera on stage but also becomes an ecosystem that negotiates its own operatic conditions (performative, spectacular, labor processes) on an ongoing basis.

Rotterdam Cultural Histories #12: Witte de With; What’s in a name?

The 12th edition of Rotterdam Cultural Histories is devoted to the legacy of the institution's name. It attempts to lay bare the activities of Witte Corneliszoon de With, the motivation behind street-naming in the nineteenth century, and the naming of the institution 27 years ago. It also aims to provide a space for public feedback on the question as to whether Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art should change its name.

Our opening coincides with the openings at TENT Rotterdam (located in the same building on Witte de Withstraat 50), Wilfried Lentz, A Tale of Tub and AVL Mundo.
