Witte de With wants to provide a platform for students to experience (contemporary) art and exchange ideas with each other, as well as with curators and artists. That was the reason for the education department to organize an event for and by students. Blijf waar je bent (Stay where you are) was inspired by the exhibition “Be what you want but stay where you are”. Themes that are addressed in Blijf waar je bent include tolerance, power, racism, and identity ? topics we are confronted with in modern-day society and everyday life.

Program Overview

Brainstorm evening

On Tuesday evening, March 15, a group of students met at Witte de With in order to discuss the exhibition’s topics and the content of the event. The ideas formulated during this “think-tank evening” provide the basis for the program.

Guided tours

On the afternoon of Friday, April 29, the curators of “Be what you want but stay where you are”, Ruth Noack and Roger M. Buergel, are giving a guided tour of the exhibition for everyone who wishes to take part. Questions, answers, and discussion topics that arise during this encounter will form the basis for the pre-debate.

Pre-debate evening

The following week, on May 11, we invite you to talk about the tour in a small group; at the same time it is a foretaste and preparation for the public event on Wednesday, May 25. Your voice counts: the topics that spark the most interest will form the starting point for the event.

“Blijf waar je bent” event

On May 25 we are all set: a public and larger-scale gathering of students.
– the artist Wendelien van Oldenborgh and the audience look at, listen to, and discuss her work The Basis for a Song.
– Scep and DJ Fader, two performers from the Rotterdam hip-hop scene, give the musical starting shot for a debate. Wendelien uses their socio-critical texts in her work. They will also present their “manifesto”.
– The debate will be chaired by Farid Tabarki. Farid is a political scientist and a member of the editorial staff for Coolpolitics. A panel of students will start the debate. For the general public, the maxim is: join in with the discussion!
– We conclude the evening with drinks – the ideal opportunity to talk with each other personally.
